Many Mind Creek Stormwater Modeling

Hydrologic and Hydraulic Models can be useful in determining solutions to common stormwater induced problems such as erosion, flooding and contamination.

Situation: Many Mind Creek is a stream that flows from the Lenape Woods Nature Preserve in Middletown through the Borough of Atlantic Highlands and eventually drains into Sandy Hook Bay. Although the headwaters of Many Mind Creek are located in a forested area, the stream takes a course through an area thick with residences and businesses. Over the years, the stream has been subject to channelization, contamination from coal-tar and its byproducts, siltation, runoff, and erosion. Many Mind Creek is also the recipient of the majority of the Borough of Atlantic Highland’s stormwater.

Action: The Rutgers Cooperative Research & Extension have developed a hydrologic and hydraulic model to evaluate the impacts of stormwater on water velocity and water surface elevation. The original model represents conditions as they exist. Other scenarios were then simulated to evaluate the effect of potential mitigation measures.

Impact/Outcomes: The intended outcome is to provide the municipalities and concerned citizens with guidance on how to manage stormwater issues specific to the Many Mind Creek. The model was able to simulate three potential mitigation projects being considered by the Many Mind Regional Stormwater Management Committee and the Borough of Atlantic Highlands.
